Focus Group Discussion (FGD) “Potentials & Problems in Limboto Lake and Surrounding Areas”

The Gorontalo Provincial Government together with Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat) Manado held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Potentials and Problems in the Limboto Lake Area. The FGD which was held in the ballroom of the Grand Q hotel, Gorontalo City, Friday (18/10/2019) was a form of community service in the context of the 55th Anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering Unsrat/LUSTRUM XI.

Rector of Unsrat Manado, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ellen J. Kumaat, M.Sc, DEA said, Lake Limboto in 1932 had an area of 80 km and a depth of 30 m. In 80 years later, Lake Limboto only had an area of 25 km with a depth of 2,5 m.

"This means that, from year to year, Limboto Lake is experiencing a fairly extensive degradation," said Prof. Ellen.

He explained that handling Limboto Lake does not only require thinking, but requires extraordinary financial assistance if we expect this lake to continue to exist.

"We also met last night with the Gorontalo governor and told him about Lake Limboto. He said that if it was only finished at the seminar, it was Lake Limboto, so we were asked to move something. Incidentally, there is the Secretary of State, most of the Heads of Staff are from the Faculty of Engineering. We have to provide real input that can be implemented and have a real impact, not just on paper,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of Gorontalo Province, Darda Daraba, said that Lake Limboto for Gorontalo Province is a part that has historical value. In addition to providing benefits to the surrounding community, it is also a natural moment that has the beauty and richness of biodiversity.

Through the discussion, Sekda Darda hopes that there will be suggestions and input related to comprehensive and integrated policies and strategies for the development of the Limboto Lake area.
